Public Debate Women in Power
Saturday June 6, 4.30 PM, Educatorium Building - room Theatron (address: Leuvenlaan 19, Utrecht
Speakers: Hedy D'Ancona, Liesbet van Zoonen, Trudy Blokdijk and Gloria Wekker
Since the academic field of Gender Studies is always closely related to and influenced by developments in our society, a major publicly accessible debate is organized around themes that touch upon the practice of Gender Studies and society.
-
Women in Power and Representation. In this debate, women with important social or public positions will engage in a debate about the representation of powerfull women in the media. Is there a difference between the representation of powerful men as opposed to powerful women? How are women represented in Europe? What consequences do these (mis)representations have?
-
Women in Power and Policy. What is the impact of Gender Studies on governmental policy making? What connects feminist researchers with feminist policy makers? Is it wise for researchers who want to have an impact to call their research 'feminist research'? How political is Gender Studies?
You can find the preliminary programme of panels, roundtables and posters on this website under Content. A time schedule of panel and round table sessions can be found here as well. The conference will be opened by Professor Rosemarie Buikema and closed by Professor Rosi Braidotti. Please check the website regularly for updates!
Besides the elaborate academic programme, which you will find under Content, the conference offers various social and cultural side programmes:
Art Programme
The conference discusses a diversity of topics that relate to art and cultural practices. This is is reflected in an extensive art space where screenings, performances, debates amd exhibitions take place, relating to the themes of the conference. To bridge the gap between the artistic interventions and the academic program, we incorporated several panels where artists and curators will discuss issues such as globalization in art production and feminist artistic practices. There will also be a number of films/documentaries shown in the loop in the space where panels take place (room BETA).
